Swagger Like Her - Amanda Diva

She doesn't mention it here, but I remember Amanda from her Nickelodeon days on "My Brother And Me" which I am absolutely not afraid to admit that I loved all 13 episodes of that series! I met Amanda in the Bahamas at a DJ convention and must say that she is definitely one of the most chill people you will ever meet!

Thundercats Movie Trailer

This is fan made but a very well done trailer in my opinion of one of my favorite cartoons of all time, Thundercats! Hooooooooo! They used Brad Pitt, Vin Diesel and Hugh Jackman for the characters. I hope the real one is on the way!

Mick Boogie Presents - Adele: 88

Fresh off the success of the internationally-acclaimed Viva La Hova, the MB team have reunited to introduce rock star Adele (nominated for 4 Grammy awards) to a whole new audience.

Adele's album 19 set trends and created influence in the pop, rock and international worlds. But what would happen if the vocals and instruments of 19 were combined with the hip-hop sensibilities of the late 1980s, considered by many hip-hop's golden age?

The result is the new release from Mick Boogie... Adele: 1988.

More than a mashup, it's a complete reinterpretation of Adele's album as only Mick Boogie and friends can do.

1) Chasing 1988: The Intro (f/ 6th Sense)
2) Day Dreams (nVMe Remix)
3) Tired (6th Sense Remix)
4) First Love (Remot Remix f/ Naledge)

Swagger Like Her - Rosario Dawson

Photobucket

While most men consider her their ultimate C.I.L.F. (easy one) I definitely consider Rosario Dawson to be one of the most coolest chicks ever on film and yes she is gorgeous! I was watching her make the TV promo rounds this week for her newest flick 7 pounds and so I've been checking out some of her movies in my DVD collection as of late like Deathproof and was very pleased to see that she played Ed Norton's babe in 25th Hour. Love Ed, but that's for another day!

The last time Rosario Dawson joined Will Smith on the big screen was in Men in Black II. Now she’s his leading lady in Seven Pounds, the wrenchingly emotional story of a man who puts his own life on the line to save the lives of strangers. Dawson stars as Emily Posa, Smith’s love interest with a deadly heart condition. As the odds of her survival become slim, they fall deeply in love. The actress did whatever it took to get it right, including extensive research on heart transplants, reflecting on her own mortality and working with a very nervous Will Smith.

Q: You really wanted this role, didn’t you?

A: I fell in love with her when I read the script, but I knew I was competing with a lot of other actresses who wanted to play her. So I didn’t mind doing auditions and putting myself out there to convince them that I needed to do this part because I felt like I understood who she was. I knew that I’d become a better actor for playing her.

Q: What connected you to her?

A: We were in the same body, Emily and I. She looked like me, she felt, in so many ways, like me, even though her heart was failing and I’m very healthy. I just admired her courage and determination to live life in spite of the fact that any day could be her last if she didn’t get a new heart.

Q: Was it unsettling to play someone who’s facing her own morality?
A: It wasn’t as scary, actually, as I thought it would be. I did a lot of research talking with patients who had congenital heart disease. It was really very profound to realize how close some of them were to their own morality. I already understood that from people in my own life who are HIV positive, seeing what that feels like for them. I’m 29 years old. If I was told I had six weeks to live, how would I deal with it? So I’m going to at least take what I know about my mortality and appreciate everything, like walking down the street and thinking about how easy that was for me to start running and all the other things that you take for granted.

Q: The good news is that you get a love scene with Will that’s one of the most intense he’s ever put on the screen.

A: It was at the very end of filming and I was thinking about how beautiful and fulfilling it would be. You know, girly kind of stuff because I’m a real romantic. And Will was like, ‘All right. We’re going to do this scene today. Woo!’ I went, ‘Calm down, we’re not about to play basketball.’ I had to get him to chill out because he was so nervous and actually very shy about doing all that intimate stuff. We joked about having his wife Jada there just to kind of help him out, which might have been a little weird. But it turned out to be a very sweet and really incredible moment between us.

Q: Did you connect with the idea of someone totally committed to changing the lives of others no matter what the personal cost?

A: I believe so much in the idea of strangers reaching out to each other and having a positive effect. It’s inherent in all the work that I do with groups like the Lower East Side Girls’ Club. I believe the ideas in this film are tremendously important to be shared on a large scale.

Q: Do you think of yourself as a good person?

A: We are judged every day. There are people out there who might think I’m a jerk and people out there who think I’m more than just an actress. Personally, at the end of the day, I think of myself as a good person. Do I think I’m perfect, though? Not by any stretch of the imagination. I’m always trying to be a lot better. And after a movie like this I definitely see where I could be stronger in that.

Q: You relocated from the Big Apple to Los Angeles. Are you getting used to it?

A: Basically, growing up as a New Yorker, the whole L.A. driving thing has been very new to me. I like driving a lot. I just really enjoy that space. I always take it as an opportunity to listen to music and check out the scene. But other drivers? I’ve been in situations where I’m driving and people start wading into my lane and cutting me off. And there was a woman painting her toenails as she was driving. It’s shocking to me what people do behind the wheel. I’m like, ‘I understand you’re bored and you think you can drive this route with your eyes closed, but you can’t.

Q: How do you feel about the way women are portrayed on the screen?

A: I see a lot of positive images. I’m just tired of all the movies like Saw where women are just the objects of brutality. We’re at war right now. And it’s really interesting that it seems like such a male-dominant thing. But there are a lot of women who are a part of the fight in Iraq, and people don’t ever really think about that.

The Real Black List...Seriously?

Seriously? No, I mean seriously? I don't mean to sound like a bad Grey's Anatomy read over but...Seriously...

Now that Obama has been elected, a tipster inside a PR firm tells us, clients are demanding "an increased number of African Americans added to the guest list" at their holiday parties. In the spirit of hope! The email can't really be "verified," but appears genuine and is just too important not to share. This firm has even assembled an official internal "Diversified Holiday Guest List," in which they rank the top 10 acceptable black socialite attendees, in order of desirability. Uh... yes we can? After the jump, meet the fashion world's ten favorite African-Americans for Obama-era parties. Jesus christ:
Job descriptions and order of "desirability," from the PR firm's original list (NOT BY US):

1) Bonnie Morrison (PR Guru)
2) Genevieve Jones (Socialite)
3) Maggie Betts (Socialite)
4) Malcolm Harris (Designer/Activist)
5) Moises De La Renta (son of Oscar)
6) Kehinde Wiley (Artist)
7) Nicola Vassell (Deitch Gallery Director)

Akon Says "You're Welcome" To Rappas Turnt Sangas

Photobucket

"As an artist, depending on who you are, you should never be in a situation where you feel threatened by another artist," As told to MTV recently "If anything, I embrace the fact that they're doing it. Music changes every year. I'm just happy [about] the fact that people are jumping on what we're already doing. I look at it like a tribute to what we're already doing, and I look at it like a compliment, really."

"I say 'you're welcome' every time I hear [rappers singing]...A melody has a way of describing [words], 'cause of the emotions that come with melody. Melody brings it out better than a bland vocal. It's easier to relate."

He also noted that he doesn't see the trend stopping anytime soon.
"I definitely think it will continue and grow. Hip-hop grew out of its element; it's literally a lifestyle now."

The fact that he says "You're welcome" is not a dig at Kanye West. Akon made it a point to compliment West on his latest project.

"With Kanye, you never know what to expect. He's not afraid to experiment. He's always had that open mind. That's how you have to be as an artist."

Quest Love's True Holywood Stories

Photobucket

I'm checking out Okayplayer.com via a link that DJ Wally Sparks sends me and thanks to ?uest, I'm staying up until 5am reading and basically LMAO at his first hand accounts of various meeting with almost any celebrity that you can name. One celeb story in particular stood out to me so much that it blew me away and that was his Will Smith episode...Unbelievable!

Will provided me with two of the most amzingest stories of my career.

Y2k at the white house.

and

the last january week of 06 in his crib.

my boy says you can judge the level of success someone has in hollywood by the amount of seconds it takes you to get from the gate of the entry to the actual house.

while doing 20mph it took 35 seconds.

imma just do the point system.

drove through the jurassic park gates
passed 3 city blocks. with 15 brownstone per block.
--yes a REAL neighborhood.
was told they fly family out there for reunions and stuff. makes it easier.
so even to live in his BROWNSTONE is a life achievement...let alone HIS crib
he has a stadium in which he does sunday Bball games with his boys/crew
(yes a real stadium with referees and a scoreboard bleachers, lockerooms and concession stands)
you step in the house and you notice the floor is MADE OF BUTTER LEATHER
the whole time im asking him "are we allowed to...step on this?"
his housekeeper gives you orange juice only to realize its 3 days old. and it MUST BE FRESH SQUEEZED.

you joke (what you got a grove and workers in the backyard?) only for jada to open the door to reveal a grove and workers in the back yard.

the spice rack and its fungshui'd color coordination is so impressive and big you yourself say this is a life goal for you wanna reach....

not have this spice rack.

just live here.

in this room

IN THE SPICE RACK!

but that aint it!

see the thing about other hollywood mansions are people come with this mentality sorta like chris rock explained: you always got one bag packed like you know you gonna be thrown out anyday now ---or you have this idea that you "might" go broke.

but not will smith.

he says he waited 7 years to make his dream spot. and even then he regrets the largeness of it cause how in the world can his kids be grounded growing up in literally the best built house in california?

i mean it is.

i asked him how do other cribs rate....like i know white people dont like or are as concerned as "shinning" as we are. so thus whereas maybe a megamillionare like steve jobs or even bill gates might have a nice sound system in his house....he aint gonna have the swagger to ball all out and make a nightclub built by the top university for deaf students in which the speakers/woofers vibrate on the floor....thus FORCING YOU to dance....so based on the black celeb ballin factor---ball players dont really got "taste" and just get tacky shit (i can verify this), and aint no black actor in the top bracket to really go all out and ball. and jada actually has taste so will only gives props to his only inspiration in the world of balling ass cribs: eddie murphy.

naturally i asked "what about MJ?"

will laughed and said mike cheats: "anyone can build disneyland....i mean if i was a big kid and wanted a house full of every videogame and trinket then perhaps.....but as far as build and structure (EVERYTHING is hand made so it feels like bedrock) Will wins.

his movie theater? this SHIZZZZNIT
he even has a "ghetto kitchen" built like the set of good times (they have 80% of their meals in there....and once you sit in there for about 20 mins you really do think you are in a "regular" spot.

his studio is nicer than most

his gym is nicer than most

his art collection

his lagoon/pool

all that shit sons anything beyond your wildest dreams....but this was the kicker that had me on some martin lawrence-seeing-eddies-bubble hill crib for the first time (mar started turning into a girl saying "ummm eddie can't you play more of your music? whuuuusup whuuusup whusssup with you?") was:

will: hey check this out (*grabs remote....presses a button....*then talks all normal like he aint about to change your life in less than 40 secs) yeah im really glad you like this house...alot of this art was handcrafted in africa when (35 seconds) i shot ali......even ali himself did this piece right here....

?: wow he is an artist (20 secs) too?

will: actually he was doodling on the table place napkins and i (15 secs) told him im taking this home to hang up....jada's mom has a balcony overlooking the living room on some queen of the castle shit...and over here.....ahmir?.....james?.....ahm (5...4...3....)

?: james?.............(*still standing in the SAME spot where the living room USED TO BE*).....james.....will.....um.......where did the walls just disappear to?.....and why are we suddenly outside?....how in blue hell did the walls just vanish like that and now we are friggin outside?

BALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLIN!!!!!!!

Unsung: The Slow Motion Video Sequence

Maybe they don't know...don't show...or don't care about the one video tool that was most responsible for hip hop's rise to fame. Like T-Pain's vocoder, I think the slow motion video sequence is feeling a bit betrayed by the way it has been used, abused and essentially left for dead by all that have beared the fruit of it's labor!

Sometimes I look back and reminisce about how the slo mo edit basically romanticized Hip Hop and truly made it the melodrama that it is now most famous for today. I decided to chronicle the rise and fall of the slow motion video sequence with a few of my favorite videos.

It all started around the year of 1993 as a quick edit motion to transition from on video set up to another as to give rap videos their seemingly effortless flow from one scene to the next as diplayed throughout Video A (one of the earliest videos known to use the effect):

Video A: Onyx - "Slam"

Video B seems to adapt the same principles as Video A yet expands upon the concept of delaying slow motion camera shots. You may notice the slow motion head nod or running scenes that are soon to become quite the staple in rap videos of the era.

Video B: Del The Funky Homosapien - "Catch A Bad One"

By mid 1994 the slow motion sequence is all but required in order to have your videos played on MTV or BET. Wu Tang Clan was most known to frequently adapt the special effect with videos like "C.R.E.A.M." and O'l Dirty Bastard's "Brooklyn Zoo" but it wasn't until Video C was released that it was used to perfection in almost every scene as to evoke raw emotion not unlike an Italian ganster flick!

Video C: Wu Tang Clan - "Can It Be All So Simple"

Now by this time the hip hop music video has become over saturated with the SMVS so much to the point that it's now spilled over into the R&B format and is a main stay for teeny bop singers as shown below in Video D.

Video D: Brandy - "Baby"

For a while, it seemed as if the SMVS was here to stay forever. That was until Video E came along utterly crushing dreams and annihalating fantasies of hip hop stardom for new rappers who heavily relied on the crutch of cool video tricks and were now left to fiend for a new way of achieving success for the "add slow motion and stir" video formula is now dead and buried along with many other tactical video manuevers to include the aforementioned "ill head nod," the group running scene and many more rap video image staples! R.I.P. courtesy of The Roots, 1993-1996.

M.I.A. To Honor The Memory Of DJ K-Swift

Photobucket

M.I.A will be teaming up with Unruly Records to celebrate the music legacy of DJ K-Swift with the release of DJ K-Swifts Greatest Hits on December 9th. Both Shawn Caesar & partner Scottie B say "We are happy to have such an eclectic and versatile artist such as M.I.A to host this album. Swift and M.I.A share similarities that go deep into the appreciation of club music and the movement that Swift personified for that club sound."

Khia Edgerton departed this life on July 20th, 2008. As a celebrated disc jockey, entertainer, and producer Swift was influential in the Baltimore radio scene. She produced and co-hosted shows including the Neke at Night Show and the Big Phat Morning Show on Baltimore's own WERQ. Known as "The Club Queen K-Swift" She pumped out volumes of club tracks and Dj'ed at various local parties and with major celebrities. In the late 90's, Khia flew under the wings of Shawn Caesar and Scottie B at Unruly Productions and became a client signing to Unruly Records. Within four years K-Swift released a series of 14 "Jump Off" edition CDs through Unruly Records, making her the face of Baltimore Club music. She was also the CEO of Club Queen Entertainment and Next Level a management company responsible for the signing of Young Leek to Def Jam Records. Swift was a member of the biggest DJ squads in the country: the "Violator All Star DJ's," as well as the all female squad "Murda Mamis." Her memory will never be forgotten for becoming the face of the Baltimore club scene and expanding that culture throughout the world.

We miss you, Swift!

Unsung: Brenda Bennett of Vanity 6

Do you realize that if it weren't for Brenda being a member of Vanity 6 poor white trash girls would not have a role model to look up too? Upon further consideration, one may conclude that Joan Jett would be considered for white trash iconic status, but the brunette hair has her at a disadvantage because we all know that only blondes can be skanks, right? Hmmm...something to think on.

But back to Brenda...yeah people will always be drawn to Vanity, though I don't think she cares anymore. However, she will always be considered a sex goddess. Susan, the chick with the teddy bear or "the innocent one" and Brenda was the chick that smoked and always reminded me of a combination of Dee Wallace (Cujo and E.T.'s mom) and Bonnie Tyler. All the 80's fanatics, you know what it is.

Photobucket
So I was going through some old vinyl and came across the Apollonia 6 album and to my surprise and delight Brenda is basically singing a majority of the songs on that album (yeah there were only seven tracks, but whatever!)
Photobucket

Now that I think about it, Brenda kinda looks like Courtney Love! Which further proves my point about being an icon for blondes with bright red lipstick and ripped fish net tights everywhere and Lil Kim. I also ran up on the Apollonia 6 video album that I never knew existed. The internet is a great place!

I usually don't dress to match. Meaning I don't like outfits that are already put together on the rack. It's just doing to much, but I do like these pieces! Plaid is really back!

Kanye West Ft. Young Jeezy "Amazing" Audio

Photobucket

Listen Here

Kanye West was on the Def Jam conference call today for short period of time. He took a break from a listening party he's got going on right now in the UK to talk to us American DJ's about 808's and Heartbreak, the album release date and such.

Speaking on 808's and Heartbreak, Kanye says, "Niggaz have given up making music on a Quincy Jones level...When I listen to Jimi Hendrix and The Stones and Lenny Kravitz...I'm trying to push my craft to a level where no nigga ever made it to...."

"For those hating cause I'm not rapping right now...Thank you for letting me sit on my therapuetic couch and get this off."

When asked about moving his album release date up he says, "The label moved the album up to get more Thanksgiving sales. I had nothing to do with that! I'm confident with it!"

The Unborn - Movie Trailer

Ok, I know this movie is going to be good. Not just good, scary!

"Writer/director David Goyer (Blade: Trinity, The Invisible, Batman Begins) gives a terrifying glimpse into the life of the undead in The Unborn, a supernatural thriller that follows a young woman pulled into a world of nightmares when a demonic spirit haunts her and threatens everyone she loves."

This movie stars one of my favorite actors, Gary Oldman. Plus a little eye candy with Idris Elba and Meagan Good. In theaters January 9, 2009. I can't wait!

Times Are Hard For Radio Folk!

I must say that I was a little less than suprised when I found out that Charlamagne Tha God was the latest casualty in the radio biz chaos! I speak from experience. It's nice to see that Wendy Williams will continue to support her ex-side kick by giving him guest appearances on her TV show!

What inspires/motivates you?

Mountains, ocean, grace in NY, yoga, music, love, and chocolate.

What are your biggest challenges or the downsides of what you do?

Being broke, the hustle/struggle of trying to make it, not having enough time to do art, or do anything that matters most.

How do you balance your personal and professional life?

I tend to work until I literally can barely stand. Then I take a couple days where I do absolutely nothing. I don’t know how effective that method is. I’ve been trying to get back to doing yoga regularly, but it’s hard because when things get too hectic, everything not urgent falls to the sidelines. I’m a Libra, balance isn’t something that comes easy to me. It’s always the point, but rarely achieved.

What career achievement are you most proud of?

I don’t know yet.

What was your biggest personal/career mistake and what did you learn from the experience?
My biggest career/business mistake was spending my own money on my website business endeavor. You should always structure a business endeavor so that if it fails, you still have your own financial structure intact. My biggest personal mistake was probably somewhere in the love department.

Was there ever a time when you thought you might not succeed in what you’re doing? Please explain.

Every day. And every day I’m sure I will succeed. This industry is a constant mind fuck. Not recommended. It’s like a blessing and a curse to be an artist. This society does not value art anymore, it values celebrity. Talent no longer equals success, not that it ever really did, but at least those who succeeded were usually talented. And hard work doesn’t always pay off. The inspiration though, for me, lies in the people who are inspired by what I do.

Guiding principles?

A solid mental/spiritual foundation, a hard work ethic, and patience.

Birthday? Where you grew up? Where you went to school?

September 25th. I grew up in Philadelphia and went to Springside School, Central High School, Germantown Friends School, Wesleyan University, and Howard University.

DJ's Talk Presidential Playlist

I know every DJ in the world is thinking the Inaugural Ball is the gig of a lifetime. Way before Obama grasped the Democratic nomination, mixtapes had already begun to make the rounds on popular Hip Hop sites. Prompting many a DJ (including myself) to gather their "Presidential Playlist" in the wake of the inevitable history making event that is the Obama Presidency.

I texted a few of my fellow DJ brethren via tmail (no iphone here) to ask 'em what they would play if they could spin one record at the Inaugural Ball. Here's how the mini convo went down:

DJ E-Feezy: The Heavy Hitters, B96, 98.3 The Beat - Louiville, KY
Public Enemy - "Fight The Power"

DJ Impact: Core DJ's, Disturbing Tha Peace; Missouri
Took the word's right out of my mouth [@ E-Feezy]...I've had it on repeat most of the day. The clean version of course! :)

Clinton Sparks: DJ/Producer, Smash Time Radio, E! Channel "The Daily 10" Boston, MA
The power has been fought and defeated already...
also [my pick is] Louis Armstrong - "What A Wonderful World"

Don Cannon: Apphiliates DJ/Producer, Gangsta Grillz Radio; Atlanta, GA
Young Jeezy - "Circulate" (Produced by: Don Cannon)

Wally Sparks: The League Crew DJ/Mediabase, Power 94, 98.3 The Beat; Chattanooga, TN
Bob Marley - "One Love"

DJ Mars: Super Friends DJ, Tour DJ (Usher, Ciara, Ne-yo ect.), Atlanta, GA
"Wake Up Everybody." Teddy Pendergrass. I played it at the Democratic Party of Georgia election party. It was monumental. Those words from those songs meant so much...every word was relative to what's going on right now.

DJ Jamad: Aphilliates DJ/Producer, Tasteful Licks Records, Atlanta, GA
Hmmm, Let's see...J Dilla, "Only One Can Win" This really should have been the song played when Obama won the election. Dilla sampled the classic Sylvers and made a classic from a classic! I have so many other's to choose from but Dilla is my favorite producer of all time. Go Obama! Oh, yeah "Dilla Vs. Prince Party" November 21st @ Sugar Hill!

DJ Kut: Core DJs, Power 105.1; New York City, NY
McFadden & Whitehead "Ain't No Stopping Us Now" Hands down!!

Clinton Sparks: By the way, I play that in the club everytime....Cannon!

Don Cannon: "Ha, Ha! Thanks!"

DJ Quest: Core DJs, 105.5 The Beat; South West, FL
Jeezy, "My President's Black" LOL!
